If you’re a pet-friendly home, it’s a pretty good bet that’ll be on your mind when shopping for floor covering. In many ways, carpet is ideal.

Rugs are warm and soft but tough when they need to be. Carpets today are available with extra durability, stain resistance, and even pet-friendly warranties!

Buy the best your budget allows

It’s reasonable to think that a heavier rug is stronger. Weight alone doesn’t determine carpet quality, however.

Density numbers refer to how closely together the fibers are tufted. That number is always on the label. It should read at least 3000 to 5000, with higher numbers meaning more durability.

The twist is another good indicator. It refers to the number of times carpeting fiber is turned per inch.

Consider style

You'll see a lot of beautiful colors, patterns, and designs. Generally, a low pile rug is more durable and easier to keep clean. You might also consider a loop construction, like the Berber or level loop.

No loose cut ends are exposed since the fibers remain uncut with a looped construction. For you, that means no crushing or matting.

Make sure you tell the expert in the carpet store that you need a pet-friendly rug.

Fiber: the most crucial decision you'll make

Fiber is the material from which the rug yarns are made. Some stand out as incredibly pet-friendly.

Nylon is ultra-strong and durable, while polyester is known for superior stain resistance.

Olefin (polypropylene) is budget-friendly, durable, and stain-and-fade resistant. Triexta carpeting is strong with permanent stain resistance built into the fiber.
